Lucihormetica grossei

Care Sheet

Mega Glowspot Roach

About the Species

Lucihormetica grossei is a rare, slow-growing roach species known for the two bright orange “glow spots” on adult males. These roaches are native to South America and are primarily a display species. They are docile, quiet, and more about the looks than the action. And no, the glow spots don’t actually glow… they just look cool.

Male vs Female

  • Males: Smaller, fully winged, and show off the bright glow spots on their pronotum (shoulders).

  • Females: Larger, wingless or with tiny wing stubs, and lack glow spots entirely.
Both sexes are gentle and make great hands-off pets.

Enclosure Setup

Basic Setup:

  • Enclosure Type: Acrylic/glass enclosures or a plastic tub with a secure lid and ventilation.

  • Ventilation: Good airflow is important.

  • Size: A 2.5 - 5 gallon enclosure is fine for a few, larger enclosures (10 gallon+) for colonies.

Decor & Hides:

  • Cork bark slabs or stacked bark for hiding and climbing.

  • Leaf litter is appreciated for cover and enrichment.

Substrate:

  • Use a moist substrate that holds humidity well (NOT Coco Fiber)

  • Add leaf litter or sphagnum moss on top.

  • Keep it damp (not soaked) to maintain humidity.

Temperature & Humidity

  • Temperature: 75–85°F is ideal. A heat mat on the side can help if your room runs cool.

  • Humidity: 60–80%. Mist once or twice a week depending on ambient levels.

  • Water: Provide a small shallow water dish with a cotton ball, water crystals, or use fresh fruit as a moisture source.

Diet

These roaches are scavenging omnivores. Variety is key.

  • Staples: Leaf litter, roach chow, dry dog or fish food.

  • Fresh Foods (rotate): Apple, banana, cucumber, carrot, zucchini, leafy greens.

  • Calcium: Occasionally offer crushed cuttlebone or powdered calcium for health.

Pro Tip: Don’t overfeed produce. Remove uneaten food within 1–2 days to avoid mold or gnats.

Quick Notes

  • They are slow growers, so patience is key.

  • Non-climbers: They can’t climb smooth plastic or glass, but still keep a secure lid.

  • Completely harmless - no biting, no odor, no noise.

Great for display, education, or just for people who think glowing roaches are rad.
